What is the Church of the Brethren?

You may be wondering, “What does Brethren mean?” or “Is this a Christian church?”

Yes, we are a Christian church. The Church of the Brethren is a Christian denomination with a long history, a deep faith in Jesus Christ, and a commitment to living out that faith in everyday life.

At Glendale Church of the Brethren, we believe in God, we believe in Jesus Christ, and we believe that God sent Jesus into the world so that through Him we may have salvation. On Sunday mornings, our worship is centered on Jesus — His life, His teachings, His love, and His example.

Our church motto is:

Continuing the work of Jesus. Peacefully. Simply. Together.

For us, this means we try to follow Jesus not only in what we say, but in how we live.

Peacefully means we value peace, forgiveness, and non-retaliation. The Church of the Brethren is part of the historic peace church tradition and has long been known as a pacifist Christian denomination. This means we seek to follow the way of Jesus through love, reconciliation, and peace rather than violence.

Simply means we seek to live with humility, gratitude, and contentment.

Together means we believe faith is meant to be lived in community — encouraging one another, worshiping together, and caring for each other.

The Church of the Brethren has often emphasized following Jesus through simple obedience, service, peace, and community. We believe faith is not only something we talk about on Sunday mornings, but something we live out in our relationships, our choices, and the way we care for the world around us.

Most importantly, we want people to know this: you are welcome here. Whether you grew up in church, are returning after time away, or are simply curious and have questions, we invite you to come and learn with us.
